Diseases Caused by Pathogens

A pathogen is any agent — almost always a living microorganism — that is capable of producing an infection and causing disease, and the questions in this topic almost always turn on matching a disease to the exact pathogen that causes it, the part of the body it attacks, and the way it spreads from one person to another. The pathogens are grouped into a few clear families — viruses, bacteria, protozoa, fungi and worms — and since each family is treated in a different way, knowing the family is half the answer.

Before the diseases themselves, it helps to fix the five great families of pathogen in mind, because almost every question is really asking which family a disease belongs to. The smallest are the viruses, which are not even fully living on their own and can only reproduce inside the living cell of a host; next come the bacteria, single-celled organisms that can live and multiply on their own; then the protozoa, single-celled animals mostly spread by insect vectors; the fungi, plant-like organisms with a cell wall of chitin; and finally the worms or helminths, large multi-celled parasites that usually live in the intestine.

Viral Diseases

Viruses are the smallest pathogens, and because they hijack the body's own cells to multiply, viral diseases generally cannot be cured by antibiotics and are fought instead with vaccines, rest and fluids. Bacteria are single-celled organisms that, unlike viruses, can live and reproduce on their own and can be killed by antibiotics, which is the standard exam cue that a disease is bacterial. They spread chiefly by contaminated food and water (gut diseases such as cholera and typhoid) or by droplets and close contact (lung diseases such as tuberculosis and pneumonia).
